Distribution and Habitat

Commonly known as the Turkey Vulture, it is widespread from southern Canada to the southernmost tip of South America. It inhabits a vast range of open and semi-open environments, including subtropical forests, shrublands, pastures, and deserts.

Descrizione

A large bird with a length ranging from 62 to 81 cm and a weight between 0.8 and 2.3 kg. It boasts a 160 cm wingspan. Its body is covered in dense, deep black plumage, while its head is entirely featherless and bright red in colour.

Diet

It primarily feeds on a wide variety of carrion, ranging from small mammals to large grazing animals. It prefers recently deceased animals, generally avoiding carcasses in advanced stages of decomposition.

Ecological Role: The Greek name "Kathartes" means "purifier", referring to their vital ecological function of "cleaning" nature by removing dead and decaying animals.
